Equity Residential of Chicago purchased the former Denny’s site at 15th Ave NW and NW Market St. in Ballard from The Benaroya Companies. Equity, the largest publicly traded apartment company in the nation paid $12.5 million for the 1.38 acre site. Equity will build nearly 300 apartments over retail space. The site had previously attracted a lot of attention when Benaroya tore down the former 1960’s era Denny’s building. It had been designated a historic landmark by the Landmark Preservation Board but after Benaroya filed suit the board voted that there was no economically-feasible solution to preserve the old building. On June 24th of 2009, the building was demolished.
